Supported Barcode Formats
Each barcode format serves a specific purpose. The table below outlines what each type accepts, where it is commonly used, and its character capacity.
| Format | Data Type | Length | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code-128 | Letters, numbers, symbols | Up to 80 chars | Shipping, logistics, general purpose |
| Code-39 | Uppercase A-Z, 0-9, symbols | Variable | Military, automotive, ID badges |
| Code-93 | Uppercase A-Z, 0-9, symbols | Variable | Postal services, compact labeling |
| Code-11 | Numbers 0-9, hyphen | Variable | Telecom equipment labeling |
| EAN-13 | Numbers only | Exactly 13 digits | Global retail product identification |
| EAN-8 | Numbers only | Exactly 8 digits | Compact labels on small-sized goods |
| UPC-A | Numbers only | Exactly 12 digits | US and Canada retail products |
| MSI | Numbers only | Variable | Libraries, warehouse shelves |

Tool Features
Multiple Download Formats
Download your barcode as a PNG image for digital use, JPG for smaller file sizes, or SVG for vector graphics that scale to any size without losing quality. SVG files are ideal for professional printing at any resolution.
Full Customization Control
Adjust bar width and height to match label dimensions. Change background and line colors for branding needs. Modify font size and margins. Toggle the human-readable text display beneath the barcode on or off.
Instant Validation
Real-time input validation ensures your data matches the selected format requirements before generation. The tool shows exactly what characters and lengths each format accepts, preventing errors before they happen.
Auto Checksum Calculation
For EAN-13, EAN-8, and UPC-A formats, the tool automatically calculates the check digit. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13, 7 for EAN-8, or 11 for UPC-A, and the correct checksum digit is appended automatically.
Print and Share
Print barcodes directly from the browser with proper formatting. Copy to clipboard for pasting into documents. Share via WhatsApp or your device native share options for quick distribution to team members.
Complete Privacy
All barcode generation runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your data is never transmitted to any server. Nothing is logged, stored, or tracked. Suitable for encoding confidential product codes and internal identifiers.
Who Uses This Tool?
Retail Stores
Generate EAN-13 or UPC-A barcodes for product pricing and checkout scanning at point-of-sale terminals.
Warehouses and Logistics
Create Code-128 barcodes for shipping labels, pallet tracking, and inventory bin locations.
Libraries and Archives
Use MSI or Code-39 barcodes for book cataloging, member cards, and shelf organization systems.
Pharmaceutical Companies
Generate Pharmacode barcodes for medication packaging lines and automated sorting systems.
Manufacturers
Produce Code-128 or Code-39 barcodes for parts tracking, work orders, and quality control checkpoints.
Office Asset Management
Label equipment, furniture, and IT assets with Code-128 barcodes for internal tracking and auditing.
Choosing the Right Barcode Format
The barcode format you select depends on what data you need to encode and where the barcode will be scanned. Use this breakdown to pick the right option for your situation:
Selling products in stores?
Use EAN-13 for international markets or UPC-A for US and Canadian retail. Point-of-sale scanners in stores globally recognize these symbologies. Commercial sellers need a GS1 prefix to assign valid product numbers.
Tracking inventory or shipping?
Use Code-128. It handles letters and numbers, supports the widest character set, and produces compact barcodes. Most logistics systems expect Code-128 format on shipping labels and warehouse bins.
Internal identification or ID badges?
Use Code-39. It is self-checking (no checksum required), widely supported by legacy systems, and accepted in government and military applications. Works with uppercase letters and numbers.
Small product packaging?
Use EAN-8. Created for products whose packaging is physically too small to fit a full 13-digit barcode. Frequently seen on candy bars, lip balms, and single-serve beverage cans.
Pharmaceutical packaging?
Use Pharmacode. Specifically designed for pharmaceutical production lines. Encodes numbers between 3 and 131070 and is read by specialized packaging verification equipment.
Barcode Printing Tips
A barcode is only useful if it scans reliably. Follow these guidelines when printing barcodes from this tool:
- ✓Use SVG for print: SVG files are vector-based and maintain perfect sharpness at any print size. PNG works for standard resolutions, but SVG eliminates pixelation concerns entirely.
- ✓Maintain contrast: Keep dark bars on a light background. Black on white provides the highest scan reliability. Avoid using colors that reduce contrast between bars and background.
- ✓Include quiet zones: Leave blank space on both sides of the barcode. The margin setting in the tool controls this. Scanners need this empty space to detect where the barcode starts and ends.
- ✓Test before mass printing: Generate one copy first and verify it scans correctly with your scanner or a smartphone barcode app. Then proceed with volume printing.
- ✓Minimum size matters: Code-128 barcodes should be at least 1 inch (25mm) wide. EAN-13 has an official minimum dimension of 29.83mm x 20.73mm. Printing below these thresholds leads to scanning failures, especially with lower-quality readers.
